Quantum EntanglementThe office was a flurry of activity when I entered. No doubt it had been this way ever since the Endeavour entered a stable orbit. Two centuries of planning, prep and endless waiting, and for the first time, mankind had reached another star.
“Rosen?” A hard voice called across the medley of movement and chatter.
“Here, sir,” I called back and hurried over to Doctor Lindborn.
“You’re late. Take this and get into the observation room. We need to prep you for entanglement.” A swipe across his tablet sent a chart from his screen to mine.
I nodded and left, weaving between rows of desks and technicians, towards the glass fronted room that would be my environment for the next week. Sutter was already there, leaning back in his chair, silver augment stretching across his brow, between his temples. Beyond him were a dozen identical chairs, each with its own attending techie.
Doctor Petrovyn entered behind me, and we were both whisked away to sep
Powerwhine's LamentJuanita Alvarez sat in the house she shared with Dominique Freeman, watching the television. Dominique was out on a date this evening, and Juanita didn’t expect her to be back for a while. So it was a shock when the opened door opened. She swiveled her head around to see Dominique slam the door behind herself. “I take it the date didn’t go well?” Juanita asked.
“That bastard…” Dominique muttered angrily, mostly to herself, as she hung her coat up.
Juanita shut off the TV and asked, “Care to tell me what happened?”
Dominique walked over to the end of the couch and crossed her arms. ”So we’re in the middle dinner when he gets a phone call. I get curious about what he’s talking about, and so I ask him what it was about after he was done. He tells me, and get this, that it was his wife! Their kid was sick and she was giving him an update.”
Juanita winced and said, “Ow.”
Dominique nodded and continued
Trust Machines - Leashing"What the hell is that?" Michelle asked startled, pointing at the apparition leashed on a park bench. Sheryl followed her gaze and cocked an eyebrow.
"An elephant, obviously." she observed, apparently unimpressed and Michelle shot a withering look at her friend.
"Of course it's an elephant." Michelle responded tartly. "That I can see for myself. What I want to know is why it is only the size of a pony and why it is leashed to a park bench!"
"Hm..." Sheryl pondered. "Perhaps that's simply someone doing Leashing."
Michelle looked at Sheryl with a blank look on her face. "Leashing?"
Sheryl sighed. "Yes, leashing. Girl, you need to stay in touch with the current social media themes. Look, there's someone taking pictures of the elephant!"
Indeed there was a boy in their age shooting images of the small elephant with his smartphone. Which, in Michelle's opinion, still didn't explain shit.
"I still can't follow. Of course someone is taking
The Creamfast CaseThe Ollenberg Auditorium was filled with people, both large and slim. This was truly a main event, in its own right. Amongst the clamoring people, a troupe of security guards were heading over to the podium, but nobody was able to see the person they surrounded.
Once the person got up, he was finally revealed to be wearing a golden lab coat, to match his already eccentric hair. The rest of his outfit was actually clad in black.
"Good citizens!" He said, "I'm so thankful you came here today! I've noticed that obesity is gaining some kind of popularity. But the problem is that the epidemic is rising faster. So, I've created a solution!"
He brought out a tub of ice cream. Then, he took out a remote control, and activated a movie.
There was no narration, but the scientist said, "You see, people, this is Creamfast, the latest in weight-loss technology. I understand how some of you have busy jobs, but this concoction is both an enjoyable treat, and guarantees near-instant results! For t
Inventor and Creator- EndingIt is a rather peculiar tale. Yet, she was a rather unusual lady, with a very odd and fantastic secret. However, like all tales we must draw the curtains and lament the fate of the inventor and her creation christened Emmeline. It would appear that the cruel Fates decreed a sad end for our star-crossed lovers. This here is how the story concludes.
The inventor prepared for her final journey. She set all of her affairs in order. Her remaining research was to be passed on to her fellow scientists for them to decipher and perhaps innovate the golden age of Society. She took great care to leave her remaining assets to Isaac, for the children she would never set eyes on again. The inventor could not bring herself to step foot in the family manor. She did not belong in their domestic bliss. But she could leave her nieces something to grasp for, an education, a chance to excel just as she did with the best men of science the world had ever known. This was the legacy she intended to leav
The First BlastTim left his home in a daze. He wandered across his lawn freely, like someone who knew he had to get somewhere but who had no idea where that was. He looked up at the cloudless sky, staring right into the sun. He shut his eyes, then opened them and turned them down the row identical, brightly coloured two story houses that made up his neighbourhood. Still somewhat in shock, but slightly more confident in his movements, he began to walk down the row, just skirting the edges of the bright green lawns and paved driveways.
Almost everywhere he went, families were gathering on their yards. The same shock and awed loss of direction was apparent in everyone’s faces, as if they had all woken up from a strange dream. He nodded politely to those he passed, waving hello to a few. They returned the favour, though their friendly smiles carried even less genuine feeling than normal.
The cause for their shock and awed expressions was clear. No one questioned it, everyone understood as soon as t

‘Jett Harper,’ the judge called, and Jett rose. ‘How do you plead?’
Jett stared at him unwaveringly. ‘I’d like to tell my story first.’
‘About how you killed eight people and left them on Seriph?’
‘I’d like to tell the true story.’
The judge sighed. ‘In that case, begin.’
Alec wiped a bead of sweat from his temple as he turned the dial up on the thermostat beside the glass tank. He paused, eyes narrowing at the Seriphid that crouched motionless behind the glass, eyes closed.
Jett hummed quietly and jotted down the new temperature in his notebook before turning to his lab-hand.
‘If exposed to high temperatures such as these,’ he explained, ‘proteins in human cells denature and the person dies. It messes with y
The Robot and the PrincessDarkness fell heavily across the cityscape at sunset, casting long shadows from the countless pinnacles that reach heavenwards toward the two moons suspended like great rough-skinned melons above them. The dark canyon abyss that was the streets below was both the shelter and the harsh climate for billions of souls. Despite the legions of brilliant lights that flashed, called out, and beckoned lost souls to them in veritable rainbows of color along every thoroughfare, the streets themselves seemed eternally cloaked in shadows. It almost seemed that the harsh lights only caused the shadows to appear darker, and such shadows. They resembled the humans that cast them, yet were hideously skewed, and stretched into twisted shapes from positions the of the lighting. Such was the world called Talonus.
Talonus is an odd world of outcasts, unwanted by the even the conquering Thressian Empire that ravaged that place with war, not eighty years prior. Though they fought, died, and killed for the ri
A Twist of Fate (What Happens Next Contest Entry)Knock Out was beginning to wish that he hadn’t rushed into becoming an Autobot. Why, you might ask? If he’d have known it would have meant that he’d have to prove himself; he wouldn’t have hit Starscream over the head with the Immobiliser.
“Come on Knock Out! We aren’t on a break yet! Get moving!” Bulkhead shouted. The things I have to do…
“Alright, I’m coming!” Knock Out shouted back, before adding quietly to himself. “Don’t get your under-armour in a twist…” Knock Out reluctantly trudged off to see what they expected him to do now. He wasn’t expecting to find Bumblebee and a bunch of Vehicons stood around a pile of pipes.
“You need to help us move these, they need two bots to carry them; and there are only 7 of us.” Bumblebee explained.
“Where is Bulkhead? Surely he’d be a better candidate for this job?” Knock Out asked grumpily, those pipes looked he
